Richard Katz is the Bloedorn Professor and Director of the Division of Cardiology at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences. Dr. Katz joined the faculty of the George Washington University in 1979. After 18 years as Director of GW Noninvasive Cardiology, Dr. Katz became Director of the Division of Cardiology in 1997. Dr. Katz has grown the GW cardiology faculty to more than 15 full-time faculty plus a team of NPs, PAs, technicians, and research and other support staff. Made possible by a founding gift from Vice President Richard B. Cheney in 2005, Dr. Katz also became the Director of the GW Heart and Vascular Institute. The GW Heart and Vascular Institute sponsors a wide range of academic programs promoting education, research, and community service. Dr. Katz is involved in numerous research studies evaluating heart failure, coronary artery disease and cardiac rhythm disorders. He has served as the principal investigator for a number of national clinical trials, including: CAST (Cardiac Arrhythmia Suppression Trial); PEACE (Prospective Evaluation of ACE Inhibitors); and BEST (Beta-blocker Evaluation of Survival Trial). Currently he has been a leader in developing programs introducing community health workers and cell phone apps for chronic heart disease management. He has presented his research experiences across the country at conferences, including those hosted by the American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology. In addition, his research findings have been published in more than 100 articles and 100 abstracts. In 1991, he received an honorary appointment as visiting professor to the Royal Brompton National Heart and Lung Hospital in London, England. Dr. Katz is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and served as their governor of the District of Columbia from 1997-2000. He also serves on the editorial board of the British Journal of Cardiology. Dr. Katz is a reviewer for Circulation and the American Journal of Cardiology as well as a consultant for the National Institute of Health. He served on the board of directors for the Larry King Cardiac Foundation. Dr. Katz is a graduate of the New York University School of Medicine in 1972. He completed his cardiology fellowship in 1977 at the Georgetown University School of Medicine.
