- San Antonio Zoo and Aquarium is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing a high standard of care for its animals and plant collection while offering a recreation experience for its visitors, and is located in San Antonio. The zoo started with various animals assembled in the 1800s, and in 1914 George W. Brackenridge, one of the city's leading citizens, made a major gift of land and animals, and occupies an area of more than 50-acres. Accredited by the American Zoo and Aquarium Association, the zoo is open throughout the year. It is home to more than 3,500 animals representing over 750 species of animals, birds, reptiles and amphibians. More than 850,000 guests visit the San Antonio Zoo and Aquarium annually, many of them children participating in education programs and field trips.
