Every aspect of the way Russ w...

Every aspect of the way Russ works is clear indicator that the title on his business card ("World's Greatest Master Barber") is not overstated. As I don't travel the world and compare the results of other barbers, it's the "master" part of the King's Court experience I'll focus on.

When I called Russ, I told him exactly what I was looking for: A straight razor shave and a hair trimming (I wear a full beard and longer hair). He immediately countered by telling me that though he could shave that way, history gave us the multi-blade razor for a reason. Operating under the impression that the straight razor provided the best results, I was flabbergasted and told him as much. He said something to the effect of, "Why not come in, let me shave you, and if you don't agree that it's the best, smoothest shave you've ever had, then it's on me".

So I went, and I paid, and I tipped generously. And I'll continue to do so for as long as I remain in Cincinnati.

Gory details of the experience aside, Russ's way of working (as well as his answers) represented his level of knowledge. Nothing short of a master, he noticed that my hair was thinning in several places, and then went on to relate his own experience with it, recommending the solution he used to me. He also explained, in detail, when and why he was using the tools he was using--and yes, at this point I was asking because he encouraged questioning during the shave.

The shave exceeded my expectations, and the cherry on top was that he used a disposable razor to do it. Unsurprisingly, a precise combination of products, methods, and cleanup procedures all contributed to the end result he promised. He made a point of asking if I was satisfied, and pressed me for more detail when I insta-answered, "110%".

To top it all off, he emphasized again and again how he likes to share as much of his knowledge and techniques with his customers so that they can handle their own grooming needs. Noble, sure, but his company alone is worth paying.

This guy is the real deal. But don't take my word for it, go in and see for yourself. And if you're not satisfied with his work, he won't let you pay him. We're talking about a man who operates on "pay me for a job done right", not "pay me for my time".

What a great place to step back in time to another era. It's more than the great shave and haircut that even I can duplicate in the morning after I wash it. It's the attention to detail like the shoe shine from his team of old master Edward and his apprentice Matthew, the real Coca~Cola w/sugar and the classic shows on the TV, the art is all so MadMen old school it should have it's own weekly TV show.

I have lived in the USA for 14 years. In all that time I had never received a decent haircut here. Every barbers I went to lazily adopted the 'army special' or a show of little more than dubious electric razor skills. The back would be cut awfully and the hair would be razored so short and spiky I would spend weeks waiting for it to properly grow out... and then when it did it would look terrible. I began to simply let the hair grow long and straggly until such time as I could get back to Europe and have someone with some iota of intelligence work on it. Then I noticed King's Court on one of my daily walks around downtown Cinci. The window was festooned with all kinds of things including a 'Best of Cincinnati" award. I was intrigued enough to visit this past Monday, buoyed by the positive telephone conversation I had with owner Russ on the phone beforehand to find out how busy he was. Once inside the place I could almost immediately sense this was going to be an experience above the rest. The ambience screams 'professional. And that's exactly what Russ was. He used scissors well before resorting to enything electric and created the layers and feathering which has resulted in maybe the best haircut I have received since living in London a couple of decades ago. The cut washes easily, laying down well - as it should - when combed wet then dries without the need for any teasing into shape. I actually wrote to him after the visit to thank him and to tell him that I will definitely be back for as long as I continue to live in Greater Cincinnati. I have never, ever, felt compelled to write and thank a barber before, that's how good it was. Massively recommended.

KILLER HAIRCUT. Seriously, stop looking on yelp, this is the place you should go to. Russ rocks, and you can get a shoe shine too. $20 for the cut $5 for the shine Sounds good to me.

A world class old school working antique barber shop right out of the 1940s. Russ was a barber in Italy on the Isle of Sardinia where he apprenticed under what he calls old world masters of the art of barbering. It shows in his work, the only con is you can't get a good haircut in 10 minutes or less unless you get it cut every two weeks. He will tell you you can have a good cut or a fast one, your choice. lol I like the good one best and since he takes appointments and walk-ins I get it my way every time
